What should you look for in a Bookkeeper?

As the old saying goes – no two shoes fit the same… and no two bookkeepers are the same.

Some of the important aspects of a Bookkeeper for you to consider are –

  • Correct and relevant qualifications – There are bookkeepers and then there are BAS Agent Bookkeepers. BAS Agents must successfully complete a Certificate 4 in Financial Services including BAS and payroll modules. Then on top of this qualification, to become a registered BAS Agent this qualified Bookkeeper must also complete 1400 hours of BAS work under the supervision of a fully qualified registered BAS Agent, accrual of regular professional development hours and are bound by a professional code of conduct governed by the Tax Practitioners Board.

  • A certified Partner/Consultant for the accounting software used by your business – Up to date software knowledge is a must.  Being a partner/consultant ensures that the bookkeeper is always upskilling and training and will be kept in the loop with the latest features, functions and updates.

  • Someone you are comfortable with – After all you are going to be sharing your financial information with this Bookkeeper. This person should show honesty & integrity and a keenness to understand your needs, your business and your industry to help your business grow and continue to move forward.
